Policy for foreign driving licence

According to the European Commission’s website, your driving license is valid throughout the European Union, provided that it was granted in one of the union’s member countries. This is also valid for motorbike licenses.

The commission states that driving licenses may be used, provided that:

  • They are valid. Please ensure that your license has not expired;
  • You are of legal age to drive the relevant category of vehicle
  • The license has not been suspended, restricted or revoked in the country in which it was granted.

For more information on the recognition of driving licenses within the European Union, please consult the European commission’s website directly.

DRIVING IN FRANCE WITH A FOREIGN LICENSE

According to the French government’s official website, you may drive in France with a driving license from outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) under certain conditions. These conditions will largely depend on the duration of your stay in France: a short visit, a permanent move to France and a period of study in France.

In the event of a visit for less than 185 days (short visit) you may drive using your foreign license provided it is valid and has been translated into French or is accompanied by an international driving permit (IDP).

In the event of a permanent move to France or a period of study in France, we would directly advise you to familiarise yourself with the validity conditions of your license on the relevant page of the French government’s website.

If you have any doubts concerning your driving license, please contact us by email, chatbox or through our telephone.
